Community Service Workers can find employment in a variety of community settings under a number of varying roles. Some of these roles include Community Development Worker, Residential Care Worker, Support Worker, Hostel and Refuge Worker, Advocate, Aged and Disability Officer, Community Project Officer or Disability Services Officer. Other community related positions are also available in areas such as recreation programs, residential services, educational, employment and rehabilitation support services. Community Service Workers find employment in the government and private sector, social housing aged, disabled and youth programs, as well as non-clinical mental health settings.
Community Service Workers need to have a mature and caring attitude, have a keen awareness of the issues and community networks relating to the demographic they are working with, have good communication and team working skills, be organised and enthusiastic. Counselling qualifications are highly regarded in some work settings. Some of these positions can be achieved via TAFE qualifications, other roles require higher qualifications.
