Biomechanics is the study of human movement from a mechanics and physics perspective, taking into account forces such as velocity, acceleration and momentum and how these affect sporting performance. Biomechanists have an advanced knowledge of human anatomy and physiology which allows them to study and make recommendations on factors such as; technique, sporting equipment design and required skills.

Using their technical scientific knowledge in the workplace, biomechanists may be involved in research for sporting institutions and bodies, consulting on the design of sporting equipment with manufacturers, performing analysis and providing recommendation on competing and potential elite athletes and working with sophisticated software to model optimum physical techniques. Postgraduate qualifications and training is necessary for this job.
