In a large agency or organisation, the Art Director reports to the Creative Director and works with a creative team of designers, copywriters and other production specialists such as Flash animators, audio designers. The Art Director is responsible for establishing the art direction on all projects and monitoring the evolution of product development. Key responsibilities may include:

  • Developing and maintaining design guidelines and standards
  • Scope new projects (cost and timing) and shape creative briefs
  • Directing and delegating work to the creative team and outside vendors or specialists
  • Directly contributing to project design and development by initiating brainstorming sessions and other planning activities
  • Mentoring and coaching team members
  • Ensuring communication between design team and management
  • Building and maintaining relationships with clients, partner agencies, photographers, production companies etc
  • Work with account managers to identify opportunities and sell ideas within accounts

Design or fine art qualifications are required together with at least 3-5 years design experience are required for these positions.  Strong project management skills together with the ability to motivate and lead a creative team, client focus and business awareness are essential.
