Biography
Steve Mitchell was born in Newcastle in 1969. In 1988 he began his Electrical Engineering degree in conjunction with a 7 year Industrial Traineeship. The Traineeship provided a broad range of electrical engineering experience including train/locomotive design and manufacture and heavy industry plant maintenance.
Steve graduated with honours in 1995 and for the next five years he worked as a design engineer for an electronics company that manufactured equipment for mining and industrial applications. During this time his work primarily focussed on the design of control and protection relays which are now widely used in underground mining settings both in Australia and internationally.
In 2000 Steve was appointed as a senior research assistant at the University of Newcastle. The research was based on the condition monitoring of high voltage bushings. From 2005 he was appointed as a professional officer at the university, providing electronic design and teaching support to the Electrical Engineering Department. In 2009 Steve was appointed as a Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the University of Newcastle.
Whilst employed by the University of Newcastle, Steve began a part time research higher degree. Steve's PhD was titled "Power Transformer Modelling to Support the Interpretation of Frequency Response Analysis" and was awarded in 2011. Following on from his roots in heavy industry, Steve's research interests continue to be primarily focussed on the condition monitoring and diagnostics of equipment found in the power and heavy industry areas.
