Biography

I completed a Master of Sports Science (UNSW), MEd. in human movement science (SYD), BEd. human movement science / pe (WACAE), Dip.Teach. pe /art (CTC). I am presently a part time Doctoral student at the University of Wollongong (physical activity and adolescent cardiovascular disease, pre and Type 2 diabetes, and obesity primary prevention programme). I currently lecture in exercise science, outdoor education, health-related fitness and aquatics, to undergraduate BHPE and BA (primary) students. I currently co-supervise 1 MEd Physical activity Postgraduate student, and have co-ordinated / lectured in the Sport Psychology distance education Postgraduate course for the Faculty of Medicine. Prior to lecturing at the University of Newcastle , I was a Physical Education Co-ordinator and Sportsmaster in the Independent high / primary schools. Prior to this I was a mechanical engineer working in England, Europe, and South East Asia before moving to Australia.

Research expertise

Stephen Jelley is a associate lecturer, and has lectured in the areas of sports sciences and human kinetics, in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle since 1995. During the Master of Sports Science degree (University of New South Wales), and the Master of Education in Human Movement Science degree (University of Sydney), the research areas of expertise development were in the areas of sports science. In particular, sports psychology, sports medicine, and exercise physiology. The research subjects were both adult, and school age elite individual / team athletes in various sports. The research base was intervention strategies to improve sports performance, and rehabilitation from sports injuries.

Studying for the Doctoral degree in exercise sciences at the University of Wollongong, Stephen has developed research expertise these areas, and advanced quantitative and qualitative exercise science research methodologies.

The exercise sciences research expertise are specifically in the areas of adolescent physical activity, health-related fitness, exercise prescription, exercise medicine, exercise psychology, and sports medicine. The main research areas are in primary prevention of adolescent obesity, cardiovascular disease, pre-diabetes, and type 2 diabetes.The physical activities have been based from adolescent residential outdoor / adventure education, and traditional physical education.

Stephen has co-ordinated courses for both the BEd and B.Teach BHPE sports science, and kinetic courses at the University of Newcastle since 1995. Stephen co-ordinated the postgraduate sports psychology course for the Faculty of Medicine sports nutrition Masters/ graduate diploma.

Stephen was the PDHPE co-ordinator, sportsmaster (high school and primary school ) for 12 years.

Stephen was a mechanical engineer administrating various engineering projects in Australia, England, Europe and SE Asia for ten years.

Teaching expertise

Stephen Jelley's teaching expertise is in the areas of sports and exercise sciences. The courses lectured in sports sciences are:

In the areas of human kinetics, the sports science included topics are in exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sports injuries. The practical kinetics subjects teaching expertise, are: fundamental movement skills, outdoor education, adventure education, aquatics, basketball, and racquet sports for both primary teachers, and high school PDHPE teachers.

The postgraduate coursework teaching expertise has been in the Faculty of Medicine, sports psychology by distance education in the Sports nutrition masters/ graduate diploma.

I have taught health education (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and human sexuality in the BEd PE & Health degree.
