Biography

Piers graduated from the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Ulster in 2000 with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, and again in 2001 and 2005 from the Faculty of Engineering with an MRes (Distinction) and a PhD. His doctoral work focused on the application of Data Mining and Artificial Intelligence techniques to the renewable energy sector and was fully industrially sponsored by B9 Energy (O&M) Ltd.

Since 2004 Piers has held a number of academic positions both continuing and visiting in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East. He joined the Faculty of Science & Information Technology in 2012 and currently teaches into the BIT and MIT programs.

Piers currently conducts research in a variety of areas though his involvement with the Applied Informatics Research Group. These areas include knowledge discovery in the medical domain and also within large datasets, something which is now termed “Big Data”.
