Biography

Dr. Michie currently holds the position of Professor of Psychology, School of Psychology, at the University of Newcastle having previously held professorial positions at the University of Western Australia and Macquarie University. Dr. Michie's primary research interest is in the area of cognitive neuroscience, particularly the neural basis of auditory information processing, attention and executive functions in healthy individuals, in people with schizophrenia and those at risk of psychosis. She has on-going research collaborators will colleagues in Finland, Japan, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. In terms of research leadership,

Dr. Michie was appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research), University of Newcastle, in March 2007. She previously held the position of Assistant Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Science and IT in 2006 and has been member of the Universitys Research Committee since 2001. She is head of the Neuroscience Research Group within the School of Psychology. Since taking up her current position at the University of Newcastle, Dr. Michie has established the Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory (FNL) with state-of-the-art ERP facilities, integrated fMRI image processing and electrical source localization tools. This laboratory supports the research activities of 6 academic and postdoctoral staff, 7 PhD students and 20 Honours students. She is currently principal supervisor of 4 doctoral level students and co-supervisor of 3 other students. Dr. Michie has a strong research record with a publication record consisting of over 90 peer reviewed journal papers, in excess of 1100 citations, an average citation rate per item of 20 and consistently in excess of 80 citations per year since 1999 (204 in 2006). The most frequently cited paper published in the last 5 years has received 27 citations. She has been awarded approximately $4.5m in NCG project grants (NHMRC and ARC) over the period from 1983 2006. She has been invited to sit on NHMRC project grant review panels (2001, 2003, 2005) and the NHMRC Program grant panel in 2004. Dr. Michie was convenor of the Neuroimaging consortium of the NHMRC Brain and Mental Health Network in 2001 and was responsible for establishing training scholarships for postgraduate students to enable them to obtain basic training in fMR image processing.
