Biography
Dr Wood leads the Nutrition programme within the Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Diseases, University of Newcastle. Dr Wood is a nutritional biochemist, who has been working in the area of nutrition and inflammation for over 15 years. Dr Wood completed her PhD in 2001, in Nutrition & Dietetics, at the University of Newcastle. Her PhD studied the relationship between antioxidants and oxidative stress in respiratory disease, in particular cystic fibrosis (CF). This work has led to significant progress being made in understanding oxidative stress in CF, with dietary fat being identified as an important factor determining the extent of oxidative damage. From 2002-2006, she undertook a postdoctoral fellowship (NHMRC Australian Training Research Fellowship), in the Respiratory Research Group, Hunter Medical Research Institute, Newcastle. Throughout this fellowship, she continued her research on dietary factors influencing respiratory diseases, in particular asthma. She undertook a comprehensive evaluation of the oxidant/ antioxidant system in asthma. This work led to the filing of a provisional patent and the development of an intervention strategy, which was supported by the award of an NHMRC project grant (2005-2008) studying the effects of lycopene supplementation in asthma. Another highly significant finding from this work was the establishment of 8-isoprostane as a clinically relevant marker of airway oxidative stress, which was published in the highest impact respiratory journal, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. In 2007, she was awarded a Brawn postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Newcastle and during this time, she has extended her work to investigate the roles of dietary fat and obesity as promoters of airway inflammation. She was awarded an NHMRC grant (2008-2010) to develop this area. In 2010, Dr Wood took up an academic position in the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Newcastle, in which she combines both research and teaching responsibilities.
Dr Wood has established and leads a research team, including 10 PhD students, 1 Honours student and 1 research assistant. Dr Wood's team is investigating mechanisms by which dietary factors, including antioxidants, dietary fat and obesity, affect blood lipid profiles, systemic and airway inflammation, as well as physiological outcomes such as lung function and arterial compliance. She has a strong publication record. She has >50 publications, with publications in the highest impact specialty journals, eg Am J Resp Crit Care Med (IF 9) and Am J Clin Nutr (IF 6). She has also produced >120 conference abstracts, 6 book chapters, 2 patents and 1 government report. In 2013, she co-edited a book on Nutrition and Physical Activity in Inflammatory Diseases.
The excellence of Dr Wood’s research has been recognized by various prizes and awards, including 2012 University of Newcastle Vice Chancellor’s Faculty award for Research Excellence, 2011 Hunter Children’s Research Foundation Research Mentor of the Year, 2011 Nutrition Society of Australia Research Award, 2011 Nutrition Society of Australia Mid-career Travel fellowship for excellence in nutrition research, 2010 Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and National Asthma Council Prize, 2009 HMRI Early Career Researcher award, 2008 NSW Young Tall Poppy award, 2008 University of Newcastle Faculty of Health Research Award, 2007 NSW Office for Science & Medical Research Postdoctoral award for Excellence in Medical Research.
Dr Wood is Honorary Secretary of Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA), Newcastle Group, chaired the NSA National Conference Organizing Committee in 2009 and is an NSA National Council member. Dr Wood is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia & New Zealand and co-convenor for the Asthma and Allergy Special interest group.

Research expertise
Dr Wood leads the Nutrition programme within the Centre for Asthma and Respiratory Diseases, University of Newcastle. This involves managing collaborations between Respiratory Medicine, Nutraceuticals Research group, Discipline of Immunology and Microbiology, Mothers and Babies Research Group and Population Health and co-supervising 10 PhD students, 1 Honours student and 1 research assistant in the area of nutrition and asthma.
Dr Wood is a Registered Nutritionist and Nutritional Biochemist, whose research focuses on the investigation of nutritional approaches to managing respiratory disease, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Her research has demonstrated, for the first time, that dietary factors can modulate inflammation in the respiratory tract and therefore may be helpful in prevention and/or treatment of respiratory disease. There is a strong community interest in dietary approaches to managing these diseases. However, due to a lack of good quality scientific data, there is currently no specific dietary advice available. Dr Wood’s research addresses this need, and has already made significant progress, by demonstrating that short-term dietary manipulation modifies respiratory outcomes. To date, she has published data that demonstrates that reducing antioxidant defences, increasing fatty acid intake and the presence of obesity worsen neutrophilic inflammation and clinical asthma outcomes. Dr Wood’s aim is to provide the scientific basis for developing definitive dietary advice and informing disease management guidelines for respiratory disease.
Research Themes:
1. Antioxidants and airways disease: Dr Wood has been leading a programme of work examining the role of lycopene in the management of asthma, which has been supported by an NHMRC project grant. Clinically this work has demonstrated that short-term consumption of a low antioxidant diet leads to reduced asthma control and worse lung function. Scientifically this work has directed further research efforts, as it has demonstrated that these clinical effects are associated with increased neutrophilic airway inflammation, which can be reversed using lycopene-rich supplements.
2. Fatty acids, airway inflammation and obstructive lung disease: Dr Wood is also investigating the relationship between dietary fat and airway inflammation. This relationship is being explored using both human and mouse models and has generated novel data, linking dietary fat to airway inflammation.
3. Obesity and Inflammation: Dr Wood’s team is undertaking a series of projects looking at the contribution of obesity to airways disease, via the mechanisms of both systemic and airway inflammation. She has secured dedicated equipment to support these projects, including a DEXA machine for body composition analysis, and is trained a Bone Densitometrist.
