Gian-Franco has 27 years experience teaching piano in various countries, with 23 of those years in university settings in the United States and in Australia. He has taught at the University of Newcastle since 1996 and became a permanent, full time Piano Lecturer there in 2002. In 2009 he joined the prestigious Piano faculty of the University of Auckland School of Music where he was invited to teach as Senior Lecturer in Piano for that year. In addition , Dr Ricci has extensive experience running a private teaching studio.
Gian-Franco has an unusually wide range of skills which he brings to his teaching craft including: a systemized and unique approach to teaching piano technique, experience in instructional design as applied to music, and experience in incorporating Music Technology and computer-based learning into to his instrumental teaching. His teaching also draws on his broad musical formation which encompasses various exceptional pianistic and string traditions.
Born in South America to a musical family, Gian-Franco studied in the United States with many noted pianists including, Béla Síki and Theodore Lettvin, he has also participated in Leon Fleischer and Abbey Simon Master Classes. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan, a Masters degree in Piano Performance from the University of Massachusetts and a PhD in Music from the University of Newcastle (Australia).
Mr. Ricci has appeared as recitalist and in ensemble in the United States, Europe and Australia. He has broadcast live for PBS public radio in the United States as well as the ABC in Australia. He has performed and recorded with his father, the renowned violinist Ruggiero Ricci in the US and Europe. His recordings include the world premiere of Yusef Lateef’s Piano Sonata on Atlantic Records, and the complete Schubert Sonatinas with Ruggiero Ricci (Violin) on the Ricci Collection label.
Mr Ricci was appointed as an examiner for the AMEB in 1997 and is currently a diploma examiner and a teaching syllabus examiner. He is recognized for his expertise in professional development for piano teachers and in teaching pedagogy. He has given many workshops for piano teachers here and in Europe on a broad range of topics from building technique, to tone production and functional piano skills.
Gian-Franco’s students have achieved success at competitions and examinations in Australia and overseas and have gone on to win places at prestigious international schools such as Eastman and the Menuhin School in the UK.

A graduate of the Universities of Michigan and Massachusetts, Gian-Franco has broadcast on the American PBS network and on the ABC. He has recorded music of Yusef Lateef for Atlantic CD and in Salzburg recently recorded a Schubert disc with violinist Ruggiero Ricci.
