This is a significant paper for the study of male infertility and spermatozoa. We were able to show, for the first time, that human spermatozoa can generate superoxide.

2009 De Iuliis Geoffry Nunzio, Newey Rhiannon Jade, King Bruce Victor, Aitken Robert John, 'Mobile phone radiation induces reactive oxygen species production and DNA damage in human spermatozoa in vitro', PLoS ONE, 4 e6446 (2009) [C1]

A first for the field, this study showed a string of cause and effect from oxidative stress to nuclear DNA damage and motility loss, shedding light on a mechanism of action of non-ionising radiation on biology.

Nova
2009 De Iuliis Geoffry Nunzio, Thomson Laura K, Mitchell Lisa Ann, Read Jane Margaret, Koppers Adam John, Hedges Andrew, Nixon Brett, Aitken Robert John, 'DNA damage in human spermatozoa is highly correlated with the efficiency of chromatin remodeling and the formation of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, a marker of oxidative stress', Biology of Reproduction, 81 517-524 (2009) [C1]

We established an assay which detects oxidative DNA damage in human spermatozoa. We showed that a large proportion of DNA damage incurred by human spermatozoa is mediated by oxidative stress.

Nova
2008 Koppers Adam John, De Iuliis Geoffry Nunzio, Read Jane Margaret, McLaughlin Eileen Anne, Aitken Robert John, 'Significance of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species in the generation of oxidative stress in spermatozoa', Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 93 3199-3207 (2008) [C1]

We present conclusive evidence that human spermatozoa produced superoxide via their mitochondria which leads to a range of adverse effects.
