Biography
Fran graduated in Mathematics from the University of Alicante (Spain) in 2002, obtaining the so-called “Premio extraordinario de fin de carrera” for the highest GPA.
In the academic year 2002/2003 he joined the Ph.D. program in Mathematics at the University of Murcia (Spain), being awarded with a research fellowship of four years by the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Spain. During this period, thanks to various fellowships by the Spanish Government, he made several stays at the University of Michigan (USA), and the University of the Antilles and Guyane (Guadeloupe, France).
He obtained his PhD in Mathematics in June 2007 at the University of Murcia (Spain), awarded “Sobresaliente Cum Laude” (highest mark). The main theme of his thesis was the study of the property of metric regularity in Variational Analysis and Optimisation.
After the completion of his PhD, he worked for nine months as a Portfolio Valuation Analyst at the private company “Multigestion Iberia S.A.” in Madrid (Spain). Subsequently, he took a postdoctoral position of three years at the University of Alicante, supported by the postdoctoral program “Juan de la Cierva”.
In 2010 he was awarded with a competitive “José Castillejo” grant by the Ministry of Science and Education of Spain for stays in foreign research centres. This grant enabled him to spend five months at the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering at Cornell University (Ithaca, USA). In this same year he was one of the 13 Spanish young mathematicians awarded with a “Premio i-MATH en India”; a grant that supported his participation in the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Hyderabad (India) at the end of August.
In June 2011 he began his current position of Research Associate at The University of Newcastle (Australia) as a member of the Priority Research Centre for Computer-Assisted Research Mathematics and its Applications (CARMA), under the direction of Laureate Prof. Jonathan M. Borwein, with whom he's currently collaborating on several projects.
