Biography
Dr Southgate has worked as a research academic at the National Centre in HIV Social Research at UNSW; in community development at Lake Macquarie City Council; and as a teaching and research academic in the School of Education at the University of Newcastle.

Research expertise
Dr Southgate has conducted social research into the areas of education, welfare, community development, health systems, and the effects of social disadvantage and marginalisation. Presently she is undertaking research into the role of professional experience in preservice teacher education. She has a particular interest in equity and education. Dr Southgate is a qualitative researcher with expertise in focus group and interview methods and in ethnography. Her theoretical interests are in feminism, poststructuralism and experimental ethnographic writing.
