Research expertise
David was a Chief Investigator on an Australian Research Council Linkage Project (2007 - 2010) with the Australian Defence Simulation Office, developing and trialing digital game-based and online role-based simulation tools for use in crisis management simulations and training. A protoype scenario and Web-based simulation engine were produced for Australian Defence Force public affairs personnel.
This work draws upon and expands David's research interests in digital game-based learning, the use of 'everyday' digital and online media technologies in learning and teaching, and the application of traditional applied drama conventions and techniques to produce engaging blended learning activities. Recent publications have examined the links between drama, education and technology.
David has also researched and published widely in the communication and journalism education fields. He is interested in the impact and application of mobile media and social media, and the implications for higher education and training in the media and communication disciplines.
Other recent research projects include:
- Scholarship in Teaching grant, Charles Sturt University (2008 – 2010)
Funded by CSU's Division of Learning & Teaching Services ($10,000) this project explored the application of radio production and presentation training resources to educational podcasting.
- Faculty Research Development Grant, Charles Sturt University, (2007 - 2009)
This $10,000 Charles Sturt University Faculty of Arts project developed resources to support introduction of mobile media production skills and techniques to the tertiary journalism curriculum.
Collaboration
David has collaborated on cross-disciplinary projects, including an ARC Linkage project (2007 - 2009) with the Australian Defence Force.
