2006 Llewellyn Alice Anne, A Voyage of Discovery-Exhibition at Aspects of Kings Park, Aspects of Kings Park (2006) [J3]

The often underestimated value of field observation and data collection in the development of a body of illustrative artwork is overcome as the collected data is presented in a multi-dimensional confluence of art and science. The resulting images generate an immediate and authentic response to the natural landscape that demonstrates the interconnections and relationships between elements of living environments. A Voyage of Discovery contributes to the development of a cumulative new approach to data collection, interpretation and application that benefits natural history illustrators nationally and internationally. The development of an innovative fieldwork methodology that can be applied to contemporary natural history illustration artwork is tested in the Voyage of Discovery: a 1600 kilometre journey through the isolated and little researched landscape of the Canning Stock Route in Western Australia. Critically evaluating existing research methods has developed a methodology that can assist illustrators to achieve consistently accurate data collection in the field that will inform and enhance the results in finished artwork. Unlike many of their fine art counterparts, natural history illustrators are required to accurately record and have in-depth understanding of the subjects they are representing.
