Biography
My research interests are concentrated in Optimization and Data Mining. In Optimization, I have been working with Genetic Algorithms and their applications in:
- Machine Scheduling (Single, Parallel, Flowshop, Jobshop)
- VLSI circuit design
- Energy distribution planning
- Oil transportation planning
- Timetabling
In Data Mining, I have been working with feature selection and pattern recognition in:
- Decision making and learning processes
- Classification using stock markets data
- Classification using gene expression data
- Genetic biomarkers for diseases
- Prediction of seizures in epilepsy.

I have co-authored a total of 59 publications, including book chapters, journals and conferences articles. My publications have been cited over 550 times (Google Scholar). I have also been awarded, as co-chief investigator, seven research grants and direct industry research funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC), Energy Australia, the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) and from The University of Newcastle, totalling AU$ 1,004,365.
