Upon enrolment with the University of Newcastle, all students are automatically registered with the University Library. Your student number is your library number. You need to create your own library PIN to use the library Online Resources. Your library PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a 4-6 digit number. It is used in conjunction with your student/library number to access online library resources, including databases and Short Loans. You can create a PIN via MyLibrary page if you haven't done so. When you create a PIN, you may be prompted to confirm the PIN by entering the number twice more. To change your PIN, logon to MyLibrary using your Student/library number and your current PIN, then select the Modify your PIN button. If you have forgotten your PIN, you can click on the Forgot Your PIN link on the logon page and follow the instructions to reset it. You may need your student number and your studentmail address to reset your PIN. Do not confuse your library PIN with your Internet Password! More information about library PIN can be found on the PIN FAQ page and MyLibrary page. |

| Find Books and e-Books | |
Print copies of textbooks via PSB Library The PSB Campus Library purchases copies of all textbooks and recommended readings for courses taught at PSB Singapore. Please use the PSB Library Catalogue to locate the books in the PSB library. e-Books via University Library The university library subscribes to a great range of online resources including e-books (electronic books or online books). All subscribed e-books are listed in Newcat the University of Newcastle library catalogue. You can browse the e-books by title via the Special Lists (electronic books) within Newcat, or search for the e-books by choosing Online Collections from the drop down menu as shown below:
Some e-books including free e-books on the internet can be accessed via the library's Online Books page. Reference books, such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias are a useful starting point when beginning your research. Online reference books in university libraries can be accessed via Newcat. Some online reference resources including free internet resources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, standards, patents and statistics are available via the Online Reference Shelf. Books not held in the library collections: Suggest a purchase If you need a book for your study or research which is not available in our library collection or the PSB library, you may request a book purchase online. Please indicate which campus you want this book to be kept in, eg Singapore Campus. It is usually the case that the majority of requested titles are ordered. Print copies for Singapore campus will be kept in the PSB Library. Check the PSB Library Catalogue for details. If it is an e-book, you can check on the status of the ordered title by means of a title search in Newcat. For how to use Newcat, see the Newcat tutorial online. |

| Find Course Readings | |
Course readings such as book chapters, journal articles on your reading list, may be available in the library's Short Loans collection. You can search in Short Loans (in Newcat) by course code, eg ELEC4400, or the lecturer's family name. Items available online are indicated by the text 'ELECTRONIC COPY AVAILABLE'. You may need your student / library number and your library PIN to view the full text. |
| Find Past Exam Papers | |
Past examination papers may be available online via the library catalogue or from the school web pages. Use the Short Loans option in Newcat to search for exam papers held in the library. Choose 'Course' from the Short Loans search menu and type in 'examination papers - subject name' or 'subject name - examination papers' eg. 'chemistry - examination papers'. If the exam paper is available online, it will have the notation 'Electronic copy available'. The Past Exam Papers of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Surveying from 2002 are available on the School of Engineering web site. The Past Exam Papers of Chemical Engineering from 1999 are available on the School of Engineering web site. |

| Find Journal Articles | |
Finding journal articles via Newcat or Databases If you are looking for the full text of an article and you know which journal it is published in, you can search in Newcat by the journal title (not the article title). If this journal is available online (see an example ), you can follow the link in Newcat to access the full text using your student number and library PIN. If the journal is not available online, you may use Get It, the library’s online document request system to get an electronic copy of the article. If you are looking for any articles on your topic, you may use the Journal and Reference Databases. The databases may include full text of the articles or only abstracts. For articles not in full text, you need to do a Journals search in Newcat to see if the full text is available from other databases. Help guides for database searching may be found on each of the database connect pages. Databases and e-journals that require passwords You need your Library / Student number and your Library PIN to access most of the online resources. A small number of databases (see an example) and electronic journals (see an example ) require an additional password specific to that resource. If additional passwords are required, the Newcat or database screen will indicate this as show in the above examples. The passwords are available online via the link on the database connect pages or on the record of the journal in Newcat. You need your university user name (Uni_ID) and password to access them. More information about database access is available on the Online Resources Access Information page. The library Online Journals page provides access to some of the e-journals by Title and Subject. The Library SuperSearch allows you to search multiple databases and e-journals simultaneously. It is useful for getting an overview of a topic, and for finding which database is the most useful for your topic area. Articles not available online? use Get It If an article needed is not available online, you may request an electronic copy of it via Get It, the library online document request system. To use this service for the first time, you need to register. Please refer to the Get It home page for more information. |

| Uni_ID and Password | |
All students and staff of the University are provided with a username (Uni_ID) and password that enables access to University intranet, internet, Studentmail and Blackboard. For students, your username is the letter "c" followed by your student number, eg c1234567. Your initial password is the four-character access key on your student card, followed by the four numbers representing the date and month of your birth, eg abcd0102, where "0102" is the 1st of February. Changing your password You are encouraged to change your initial password for security reasons. This can be done via the Online Services page by logging in using your Uni_ID and your current password. Please note your internet password is not your Library PIN. |
