Netscape 6

Do not use Netscape 6 to access the University proxy server. A known bug has been reported with Automatic Proxy configuration. We recommend upgrading to the current version of Netscape.

Internet Explorer 5.5

There is a documented bug which prevents Internet Explorer 5.5 from working with proxy servers. To correct this problem, you must download Service Patch 1 (SP1) for IE 5.5 from the Microsoft web site. However, we recommend you upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.

Internet Explorer & Apple Macs

Microsoft's Internet Explorer for the MacIntosh does not support the Automatic Proxy Configuration (as in Netscape). You can only manually set the proxy in Internet Explorer. We recommend you use Netscape.

You can download version 4.x from the Netscape web site.

When should I Use Manual Settings

If when following the instructions to set up your web browser you find that your internet service provider (ISP) has already put their own proxy address in the (automatic) configuration, then you may have problems using the University Proxy Server.

In this case you could instead type the University Proxy Address in the "Manual" as opposed to the "Automatic" configuration. This means you would have to reset the proxy back to the "Automatic" proxy address of your service provider after you have searched the databases.

If you are still unsuccessful, then contact your service provider for help and explain that you have to use the University of Newcastle's Proxy Server for database access. Tested ISPs that work with the "Automatic" configuration instructions below are AOL Online; Ozemail; OptusNet and Telstra Bigpond.

Another solution is to set up Internet Explorer for ISP dialup and general internet browsing, and Netscape for Library database searching with the appropriate proxy setup as detailed in the Netscape instructions.

Laptops

Information for staff members, etc. who are using laptops at work (university, etc) and at home. You have to enter the university proxy information in your ISP connection before you attempt to access the Library databases that require it.

University ID (Uni-ID) and Password

When you select a link on the University web site, including the library databases, that is not located on our intranet (e.g. an off-campus link) you will be prompted to enter your Uni-ID.

This information will authenticate that you are a staff or student of the University and therefore grant access to web pages that would otherwise be restricted.

More information is available on the University's Internet Access Policy and University ID and password.

If you are a new student or a new member of staff you will need to activate your Internet Access (if you have not already done so). Internet access for staff and continuing students has been automatically activated. Detailed information can be found on the above Internet Access Policy site.
