Navigation and Page Design

The web team centrally manages navigation and page design. We are currently in the process of assessing and re-structuring navigational design.

Links

The University website navigation is based around the left hand menu structure, therefore links should, where possible, be built into this area. All links relating to information within a specific Faculty/School or service area should be incorporated into the left hand menu. Links to web content outside of the area or to external websites can be made within the body of content.

URL links

URL links can be attached to words within copy, for example, Policies and Guidelines.

URL links should not be displayed in their entirety, for example: "http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/web/policiesandguidelines/index.html".

Faculty standard links

The web development team recommends the following standard homepage left hand menu links as shown in the example below:-

Individual Faculty homepages may require extra menu links on the homepage. However, more than two extra links are discouraged and will be subject to the navigation approval process.

Tables

Tables can only be used when presenting tabular data. Tables should not be used for altering the display or format of a page.

Forms

Forms should only be used when content is being submitted online. If a user is required to print out a form and post it to the University, create the form as a pdf document and offer it as a download from a page. Online forms capturing data regarding University related transactions should be hosted by the University and contain .newcastle.edu.au within the domain name.
