Endosymbiance - Warren Reilly
‘Endosymbiance’ makes reference to a condition of interdependence between two separate living entities, with one of the entities living inside of the other. This may offer some insight into the complex relationship between artist and artwork. Separate entities depending on each other for existence; with the artworks (externalised for this exhibition), irrevocably linked to their creator.
The Pygmalion Proposition - Julie Anne Ure
As mythology records Pygmalion as being one of the world’s first artists, this exhibition uses the story of Pygmalion as a metaphor for the creative drive and the ability to make art. It not only proposes that this drive has been innate to human beings since prehistoric times, but that it is also a product of many complex and interrelated elements and conditions.
WAAP 2009
The Wollotuka Institute invites you to the opening of WAAP 2009 to showcase the artwork of contemporary Aboriginal artists from Wollotuka, Newcastle and the Central Coast.
The winner of the inaugural Acquisitive Art Prize will receive $2000.

In Living Memory
Presented by the Wollotuka Institute and the University of Newcastle, this exhibition, to be held at the University Gallery from 30 September - 7 November 2009, features images from a series of 1000 black and white photographs from the official records of the former NSW Aborigines Welfare Board.
Landscape Memoir: Long to Belong - Una Rey
The original proposal for Long to Belong was drafted during the summer of 2005 in the north-west desert at Balgo, Western Australia. I felt homesick, surrounded by Indigenous artists conceiving place through paint on a daily basis. This research has been informed by patterns and phenomena of land and issues of belonging, impermanence and nostalgia.
Wild Domestic Scenes - Helen Thomas
The women in the Wild Domestic Scenes may appear to be enclosed but not contained there is considerable activity in their performances. The pictures refer to the ordinary and the domestic however there is incongruity in the unorthodox scenarios being played out. The narrative is fluid and reality is flexible.
Haecceity - Family, Object and Memory - Linda Swinfield
Haecceity - Family, Object and Memory is an examination of family, generations and their intrinsic memory. The family collection of objects and photographs has led to an understanding of the individual nature of these objects and ultimately the self.
Hybrid Memory
Victoria Lobregat and Susan Ryman both have a fascination with ways of generating meaning through the use of objects. The dialogue constructed between artwork and object, choreographs the viewer through levels of interpretation. In doing so, the viewer is led through contemplations of domesticity and travel which are strongly bound to loaded references of cultural context and blood memory.
A Long Road Home - Annemarie Murland
A personal experience of migration provides the content for this research and exhibition titled A Long Road Home. Narratives of identity, displacement and loss, common to the migrant experience are translated within an abstract visual context to describe a felt experience.
Postgraduate Exhibition - Liz Wright
In photographing myself I capture in time and in space a momentary inflection of my body in that distinct experience; voicing my ‘notion’ of what is worth observing in my own body. To approach my art practice in this way is to subtly confront ideas on otherness, identity, and embodiment.
Postgraduate Exhibition - Jessica Maiden
This series references Dr. Charcot’s 19th century Iconographie Photographique de la Salpêtriere, whose images portrayed the gestural body of the hysteric subject Augustine. These medical images evoke both experiential and communicative meanings of the pathologised feminine body. Jessica Maiden has examined ways in which the body can speak and convey hidden truths.
The Jennie Thomas Travelling Scholarship
The Jenny Thomas Travelling Scholarship provides an opportunity for Students to gain primary research and inspiration for their Honours year of study. This award was implemented in 2003 and is given to students who have a clear vision of their practice and a passion for what they do.
The Brian and Rohma Cummins Prize for Painting and Drawing
Now in its fourth year, an award for painting and an award for drawing is given to two students who have shown particular aptitude and dedication in these disciplines during their final year of undergraduate study in 2008.
Force of Nature - Euan Macleod curated by Leo Robba
This exhibition of work by Euan Macleod has been curated by long time friend and fellow artist Leo Robba. The paintings have been drawn from two expeditions to South Australian Desert country around the Flinders Ranges in 2008.

The combination of colour and object in these visual works not only seek to explore the psychological phenomenon of Synaesthesia but also references a historic wish to recreate the experience.
Celebrating 60 Years of Teacher Education
This exhibition celebrates 60 years of Teacher Education with some delightful views of first graduates, their accomplishments and their training. Archival photographs show life as it was on campus in the fifties and sixties which is accompanied by an audio visual presentation of great moments.
