Graduate Certificate in the Practice of Tertiary Teaching

2008 Program Structure and Course Offerings

The Graduate Certificate in the Practice of Tertiary Teaching aims to provide participants with opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of key principles, practices and theories in higher education, and apply these in their practice. Courses within the program focus on student learning, curriculum design and development, supervision, assessment, and online teaching and learning.

The Graduate Certificate courses provide participants with structured opportunities to reflect on teaching and learning by drawing on higher education scholarship, their own experiences as learners and teachers, and the experiences of colleagues from across the University. Enrolment in the program is restricted to current University of Newcastle staff.

The program requires participants to complete four (4) courses, equivalent to ten (10) units each. Six course options are available. Principles and Practice of University Teaching and Learning (PPUTL) (TEHE6010) is compulsory and must be enrolled in first, with successful completion before other courses are undertaken. Two other courses are compulsory, one each semester, and are marked with an asterisk *.

Please note that all participants must register for PPUTL via HRonline:

Go to www.newcastle.edu.au/staff, login to HRonline then find the "Nominate for a Training Course" menu item within the "Staff Development" folder. Look for PPUTL in the workshop and event listings under the "Teaching and Learning" category and follow the instructions to register for either the Callaghan or Central Coast course.
