Critical Incident and Business Continuity Management
The University of Newcastle is committed to ensuring it can respond to unforeseen events in a planned and effective manner and to promote the continuity and/or rapid recovery of critical services to support the core business of the University.
Risk & Assurance Services (RAS) is responsible for the coordination and oversight of the development and implementation of the University’s Critical Incident and Business Continuity Management Policy and Procedures. RAS works closely with Security Services and the Health & Safety Unit to ensure alignment between the University’s Emergency Procedures and Critical Incident response. Additionally, we work with IT Services to ensure linkage with the University’s IT Disaster Recovery Plan.
The University's approach to disruption-related risk has several areas of focus:
Risk Identification and Management
• Preventing an incident: Proactive risk treatment and preparedness - this recognises that before an event there may be opportunities to implement proactive controls that reduce the likelihood of an event occurring or its consequences.
• Responding to an incident: Contingent risk treatment - refers to processes that can be activated when an event occurs eg Emergency Response procedures and Business Continuity Plans. An important aspect of contingent risk controls is the regular maintenance and exercising of contingency plans and contingent capabilities
Phased approach to Event or Incidents
1. Emergency Management Response - The immediate response to an event or critical incident with a focus on ensuring the safety of people followed by the protection of assets.
3. Business Continuity & Recovery - The process of restoring critical elements of the University’s services and then recovering full operational and functional capability.
The University’s Business Continuity Programme includes
• Establishing and maintaining Business Continuity Plans for the University’s Critical processes
• Training staff about critical incident and business continuity
• Running testing scenarios annually to ensure management and staff are familiar with the University’s response.
