Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world.
As we divert more water from our rivers and natural stream flows the degradation of our water resources and ecosystems increases. Australians use more than 1 million litres of fresh water per person per year (ABS 2000.5:3)
The University is constantly reviewing and implementing water conservation measures. Some of these include:
- Campus landscaping at both Ourimbah and Callaghan campuses has incorporated indigenous shrubs and trees for all landscaping and minimal use of grass.
- Landscaping techniques have been developed to utilise natural rainwater and usage of run off.
- Creating storage ponds as wildlife habitats and for water reuse.
- Using stored rainwater for irrigation of sporting fields at Callaghan campus.
- Installing water saving equipment in all new buildings and refurbishments.
- Installing lever mix taps at a child care centre.
