Energy production and use contributed over two-thirds (69%) of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions in 2004 (Australian Bureau of Statistics)

In Australia, 92% of the energy used is generated from non-renewable sources. The burning of fossil fuels for the production of energy releases primarily, carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect which contributes to global warming. Energy management involves reducing the production of detrimental greenhouse gases, the impact on the environment from air pollution and energy costs. The implementation of an energy management program aims to conserve all forms of energy by eliminating waste and encouraging efficient use. Reducing energy usage does not necessarily mean a reduction in services or availability of facilities.

NOTE: Australians use approximately four times more energy per person than the world average. (Fuji Xerox)

Energy reduction is one area in which staff and students can make a daily contribution.
