The Forums... now a Conference!
The Biennial 2011 Accessing the Future: Inclusive Technologies | Learning Disability in Education and Employment Conference follows the successful 2009 events in Newcastle and Sydney; the 2007 events in Sydney, Newcastle and Bomaderry; and the 2005 and 2003 Forums held in the Hunter and Central Coast. The event typically attracts more than 600 registrants.
In 2011 the Conference will be offered over three days in one location, at the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley, a premier conference and accommodation venue located in the Hunter Valley vineyards at Lovedale.

Why a third day focussing on learning disability? The Convenors also head up the Australian Learning Disability Association and have been observing a range of needs for training in this area. We've assembled an informative program on this day to provide delegates with skills, strategies, and knowledge around inclusive technology to better support people with learning disabilities. Several pre-conference workshops also target this area.
There will also be a large Expo on Day 2 and Day 3 featuring key inclusive technology and related suppliers from across Australia. We're working on the logistics to open this to the public as well.
The Program
The Program includes a range of practical information about the types of inclusive technologies available for use in the education and employment sectors, and focuses on presentations by staff who are using inclusive technologies in their sector, and by people with a disability using the technology themselves to participate in education, training and employment. There will be many valuable journeys to listen to and technologies to see, and the Convenors are excited about how the Program has come together. The third day focuses on learning disability, and showcases appropriate technologies that can be utilised as well as presentations on empowering people with learning disability, and evidence-based strategies to support.

The event is priced below cost and is subsidised by the NDCO Program. At $495 Early Bird for the full three days of the conference - with a 2-day rate of $395 and a 1 day-rate of $195 - you won't find another full 3-day conference at the same price! The conference dinner is an optional extra at $79, plus two evening tours to the nearby Hunter Valley Gardens for their Christmas Light Extravaganza for $36.50 on Wednesday and Friday nights (unfortunately vineyards aren't open in the evening!).
Feedback from previous events indicates that registrants agreed that these days were a valuable staff development opportunity and information source.

Kay Dean and Timothy Hart are National Disability Coordination Officers funded by the Australian Government's Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
