Student Profile: Matthew
Name: Matthew
Age: 21
Course: Bachelor of Nursing, University of Newcastle
Mode: Full-Time
Year: First
Disability: Moderate/Profound Deafness
Career Goals:
Finish this course and specialise, though what area of nursing I'm not too sure yet, possibly pediatrics or epidemiology. I'm also thinking about doing a laboratory/science course later on as well.
My Experience/Background:
Mainstream school with IST-H from Kindergarten to Year 12, they all helped a lot with liaising with teachers to get extra help with the areas of schoolwork I found difficult. Did two years of Uni at Southern Cross (Coffs Harbour) before moving down here doing a Bachelor of Information Technology (Information Systems) with no help from the Disability Support Officer, since all lecture notes, etc were provided. Did ok, but there were times when Disability Support Service (DSS) support could have been useful.
Support Services Accessed at University:
Peer notetaker for courses that don't give out lecture notes
Handy Hints:
- Find out as much as you can about the universities and the courses they offer, then try to match up the course to your interests.
- Get in touch with the Disability Support Serrvice at the Uni, they can help you look at what they can do to make your time there as painless as possible and help lobby the lecturers and/or course organisers if there are any problems.
My Advice:
Ne Illegentimos Carborundum ! (Don't let the bastards grind you down!)
