Students andThere are lots of pathways that students with a disability can consider when planning life after school. A School Leavers Directory has been prepared for you, and the following pathways diagram will give you the bigger picture of what's available so you can start thinking about what you'd really like to do. The page numbers on the diagram refer to pages in the Directory.
There are lots of choices available when planning life post-school, or for people with a disability in the community.
What do I do after school? Would you believe that it's not too early to start thinking about this when you're in Year 9! The Directory is a great resource, but what you can also do is come along to one of the many School Leavers Expos we have in our Region (more information about those below), and have a look at the following…
A range of Factsheets have been compiled by the NDCO Newcastle-Hunter for staff and students/people with a disability.
Try the information on the Opening All Options website at www.adcet.edu.au/Oao/Assistive_Technology.chpx for an overview of what technology is available.
We're really lucky in our Region to have lots of activities and resources that we can link into when trying to make decisions about what to do after school.
As well as speaking with teachers and family, every year in all parts of our Region we have School Leavers Expos for students with a disability or ongoing medical condition. You, your family, teachers, careers advisers and other staff can come along and meet up with providers who offer a whole range of pathway information and advice. Go to the What's On Page to see when the Expos are.
Of course the Directory has all the information you need as well, but if you are unsure about which sections you should be checking out, you should talk to your teacher, Careers Adviser, discuss it at a Transition Planning meeting, or ring any of the staff listed throughout the Directory. (The 10 Ways to Get Your Career on Track on page 10 of the Directory also has lots of useful tips). Go to the Directory
Each section has a diagram on the steps you can take to follow a particular pathway - we hope this makes it a little easier to see the whole picture!
Our Region also has an email list for leaving students run by the National Disability Co-ordination Officer (NDCO) for students who are completing their school, TAFE, or University studies and "moving on" to the next stage of their lives, and who have a disability or ongoing medical condition.
The great thing about signing up for MovingOn is that you're able to stay connected to a supportive network after you leave your studies, and link to reliable information when you need it! You can stay connected for as long as you like. More information on the e-list.
It's best to start planning your next step early when you're leading up to completing your course or program, or if you're a person with a disability in the community seeking to enter training, education or employment.
A range of Factsheets have been compiled by the NDCO Newcastle-Hunter for staff, students with a disability, and people with a disability in the community.
Even though it's called a School Leavers Directory, most of the sections (apart from DADHC Post-School Programs) are relevant to your needs. You can find contacts for all the employment services, and all the TAFE and University contacts (also click here for regional TAFE/Uni links ), plus additional information. Go to the Directory
