Newcastle disAbility Employment Advisory Group (NDEAG)

 
About the Committee

NDEAG aims to enhance existing services and develop networks at a local level so that the needs of employers and the employment aspirations of people with a disability can be met.

 

Membership includes Newcastle City Council Officers; the University of Newcastle; Hunter New England Health; Disability Employment Network providers; Job Network providers; businesses; Australian Apprenticeship Centres; disability support/advocacy services; representatives from training centres; Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations; Centrelink; and people with a disability.

 

The Committee provides a forum for stakeholders to:

  • meet together and discuss local issues
  • pool resources and knowledge, and through cross-sector co-operation enhance the opportunities for the employment of people with a disability

Meetings are held at 10 am, the first Wednesday of every month, at Newcastle City Hall.

2007 Launch "Discover the Benefits: Newcastle Employment Strategy for People with a Disability"

Training held for Employers in 2007

The training offered in 2007 involved two half-day Workshops. The Workshops were designed specifically for people who have contact with potential employees with a disability. Initially targeted for recruitment consultants, human resource professionals and managers, the program also provided assistance to others who have a need to understand how they can positively influence interactions with people with a disability. It is intended to offer this training again in 2008 >> more information

Committees comprised of staff and services involved in the transition of students post-school have been established. The establishment of an Upper Hunter Committee is currently being investigated.

  • September 2008 - Monday 22 – Wednesday 24, Adelaide, SA: Assistive Technology: Creating Value Through Participation, Australian Rehabilitation & Assistive Technology Association Biennial Conference:ARATA’s biennial conference provides a forum for exploring issues in and the value of assistive technology for people with disabilities and the ageing.The conference will focus on enhancing and recognising the value of participation, through technology, of people with disabilities and those who are ageing. In keeping with world trends, all aspects of human activity will be considered - home, education, work and leisure.

AASE Conferences and Seminars

 

Hunter Branch: 

AASE is a national professional organisation with an active Chapter in the Hunter. Members meet regularly to discuss topical issues related to special education, and the Hunter Executive organises Special Education Conferences every two years, along with topical seminars throughout the year. Non-members are welcome. Contact the President, Bronwyn Thoroughgood,  for more information. Information is also circulated on Den-list.

Disability Education Association of NSW/ACT (DEAN)

 

State Professional Development Days for tertiary disability staff, but non-members welcome. Venue is usually in Sydney, but transport may be available from Newcastle to the venue with Kay Dean, the NDCO, as she is a co-organiser of these days.

Hunter Region Day Forum

 

Representatives of all day programs which are funded by Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care meet bi-monthly. The Forum is an avenue to network and share information with like-minded service providers. It is also the medium to discuss concerns or issues and provide collective feedback to DADHC. Please refer to the flyer for the date and venue for the Forum's next meeting, we look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.

Upcoming 2008 Events

Pathways 9 Conference: 1-5 December 2008, Sofitel, Melbourne will provide teachers, academics, students and enabling staff with exposure to optimum strategies for facilitating positive participation of students with disabilities at each stage of the student cycle. Covering topics of admissions, the first year experience, moving through courses and transition out to research and employment, Pathways 9 will offer a thought provoking program highlighting educational strategies in inclusivity that would benefit students with disabilities.

‘School Leavers Directory’ - Post-school transition guide for Hunter/Central Coast updated annually by the NDCO. 1,000 copies of the 200 page directory currently in circulation, and downloadable from website.

Booklet - Your Right to an Education: A Guide for Students with a Disability, Their Associates and Education Providers (2007). Copies available from NDCO, and available online.

CD - Will This Help? which provides information on popular assistive technologies to use in education. Produced by Tasmanian RDLO, 3,000 were reprinted and circulated to regional staff in 2005, updated by Newcastle/Hunter NDCO and Ability Technology with DEST Project funds in 2006/2007 and has been recirculated. Copies available from NDCO.

The University of Newcastle Disability Forum - for University Staff

The University of Newcastle manual Working Together: Disability Awareness for University Staff was also launched at the Forum.

 

The aim of the Forum is to educate and inform staff about the legislative requirements of both the Disability Discrimination Act and the Disability Standards for Education, as well as specific strategies which can assist to meet these requirements.

 

The keynote speaker is the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commissioner, Mr Graeme Innes, who will speak on the ethical and legislative imperatives for all universities to meet their responsibilities towards students with disabilities.

 

The guest speaker is Mr Tony Payne, Director of Student Services, University of Tasmania, who, with colleagues from other Australian Universities, recently completed a project funded by the AUTC and the Carrick Institute on "Creating Accessible Teaching and Support".  This project has assisted a number of universities to achieve compliance with the Disability Standards for Education.
