Study Support
There are many important factors in getting the most from your study here at Uni. To help this happen, mySupport has put together some study tips that may help you achieve your best results.
Understanding University Learning
Learning at University is different to study undertaken at High School or TAFE. University learning requires particular learning skills and study techniques which develop throughout your degree. This requires a self directed learning discipline. To help you prepare for University studies, you may wish to take a diagnostic test in English or Mathematics depending on your studies- you can access these tests and many more helpful resources from the ‘Learning Development’ area of the BlackBoard site.
Engage with your learning
Engaging with your learning is such an easy mechanism to improve your academic performance at University. Try to attend ALL Lectures, labs, tutorials and workshops – whether they are compulsory or not! Be prepared to not only attend these sessions, but to also actively participate in the sharing of ideas. You will get so much more out of your studies!
Be prepared for learning
Many Course Coordinators will post notes and activities online via Blackboard for you to take to the lectures and tutorials. Having these documents with you does avoid unnecessary note taking and allows you to concentrate on the important course outcomes from each lesson. This will make your study revision much easier to condense.
Prepare to PASS
The University of Newcastle runs PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) for a number of courses each semester. PASS can help improve your grades, and gives you an opportunity to ask questions of a student who completed the subject last year. For additional information on which subjects have PASS please visit:
Develop your learning style
There are so many ways to improve your revision and study. Try and look at how you learn, Are you a visual learner (e.g. mindmaps and diagrams)? or do you learn through listening (such as listening to your lectures online)? Take this questionaire to help you understand and develop your learning style. This can help you study more effectively and assist in creating an accurate revision schedule for content to be covered out of hours.
