If you are motivated in your study, and would like to get the most out of your degree, there are options available to you. Some of these are:

Why not Join ILEAD

Have a look at the UoN Study Abroad and Exchange Program

The process for applying for an exchange is quite detailed. First, you must seek approval from the institution you would like to visit. You then need to apply for credit with your faculty. If these are approved you must submit an application with the Study Abroad and exchange department to finalise this opportunity.  In order to make this process as easy as possible, it is worthwhile arranging this early in your degree for a later University year - preapproval is an option.

There are a few areas of the exchange experience that people have found difficult. Arranging your own finances was considered to be an issue, as well as arranging credit and related UoN processes. One of the largest concerns is around the admission process. This is hard work, however, most students indicate once this is organised it is a wonderful study experience.

You also have the opportunity to represent the University of Newcastle overseas which assists with your study and extracurricular activities.

There are Study Abroad workshops run throughout the year. Find out more.

Look at University Scholarships

The University offers a number of Summer Vacation Scholarships over the November to February period. The aim of summer vacation scholarships is to provide students with an opportunity to undertake supervised research in an area relevant to their program of study.

Industry Scholarships provide an opportunity for scholars to gain valuable industry experience that will assist their development as outstanding professionals. Industry Schoalrship scholars enjoy the benefits of close association with industry and gain valuable skills and experience with no long-term obligation. Scholars are highly regarded by industry and keenly sought by employers who need talented graduates with proven industry skills.

Take up Work Experience

There are some programs that offer an elective which allows you to undertake a placement as part of your studies. If you are enrolled in an Arts degree it may be worthwhile looking at HUMA3003  or AHIS2900

The Careers Service usually offers a number of internships each year. The internships run for the entire semester, and the student selected is expected to work in the careers office one day per week and assist on one of the projects currently running in the area. These internships are advertised on Career Hub under Jobs on Campus.

Careers also run expos for Vacation and work experience. For more information click here.

Become a PASS Leader

PASS Leaders are students who previously completed a course and excelled in their results. PASS Leader positions are usually advertised once a year (around October-November). As a PASS Leader you would take 2-3 1 hour PASS sessions per week. PASS Leaders will be trained in how to facilitate group learning, how to conduct sessions and the concepts of promoting a learning community.
