University owned iPads

University staff can purchase iPads, with the approval of a DVC or PVC, by submitting an iPad and Data Plan Request to IT Services.


Purchase of additional iPad Apps

Members of University Council and Senior Executivewho have been issued with a University iPad can contact the 17triplezero IT Service Desk. to arrange purchase of Apps.
All other staff requiring additional software for their University provided iPad must purchase the Apps at their own expense, and claim approved transactions through Spendvision.
NOTE: IT Services does not provide any support for damaged, lost or stolen iPads. We do recommend that you secure the device with a passcode, and use the Find My iPad service to wipe it remotely if it is stolen.

Things to consider before purchasing an iPad

However, web content is moving to HTML5 which is iPad compatible

Even free software must be downloaded from the App Store using a valid iTunes account

Be used with a University credit card?

No

Using a University credit card with an iTunes account is in breach of the University credit card policy.
If software is required (eg. GroupWise App) it should be purchased by a staff member, and claimed back through Spendvision.

Run updates without being connected to a PC?

Yes

iOS 5 enables wireless updates
The initial upgrade to iOS 5, and updates using iOS 4 & earlier versions does require connection to a PC

Only run Apps from the App Store?

Yes

This ensures the security of your iPad and offers only tried and tested applications

Be used for shared tutorial or lab use?

No

The iPad (and associated Apps) is designed as a single user device. Multi user activity may be in breach of the terms and conditions of use

Connect to USB devices?

No

A USB hard drive or keyboard cannot be directly connected to the iPad.
However, a number of accessories can be connected eg. VGA cable, Bluetooth keyboard, camera SD card reader

Be covered by an extended warranty?

Yes

An extended AppleCare warranty can be included at time of purchase.
Note: a broken screen is not covered by any AppleCare warranty.

Easy to use?

Yes

 

Suitable for travel?

Yes

Excellent for checking email and Internet

Be secured for confidential information?

Connect to a printer?

Yes

The iPad does support printing to a limited range of printers. There are some third party apps that allow printing to other printers.

iPads come in black or white (Note: your choice of colour may delay your delivery time)
Coloured covers can be purchased separately

Access a wide range of reliable software?

Yes

There is an app available for almost every need.
Apps are heavily tested and reviewed before release in the App store. Updates and enhancements are made available when developed.
