Selecting a reference style

A reference style is a specific format for presenting your in-text citations and bibliography. Your Faculty or School may require that you use a particular referencing style - ask your lecturer if you are not sure.

EndNote X comes with over 2,500 reference styles for you to choose from (EndNote calls these ‘output styles’). Four default styles are automatically available within EndNote and Word. They are Author-Date, Annotated, Numbered and Show-All.

You can choose other styles (for example, APA 5th, MLA and Vancouver):

1.
2.

You can also preview how your references will be formatted whilst you are in EndNote.

It is also possible to modify a reference style, for example to create an annotated bibliography in the APA 5th style.
