About the Law Library

The Law Library supports the legal information needs of the University staff and students. However, as the most
significant legal collection in the region, it's frequently used by members of the public & local legal profession.
The Law Library collection is in Reading Room 3 (level 3) of the Auchmuty Library. Although housed within a larger
entity it's a discrete unit offering a separate reference desk and short loans services.

Moys classification scheme- The law library is organised by the Moys system, unlike the rest of the University
library, this system was developed in 1969 to address the lack of effective classification schemes for legal materials.
Moys was developed specifically for common law based collections and is therefore heavily biased towards these
materials, illustrated by the way the room is divided into two segments. One segment contains KF, KG and KH
prefixes, representing primary materials from the major common law countries: UK, Canada, USA, Australia and NZ.
The other contains secondary source and civil law materials. Law Journals are arranged alphabetically by title with a
K1 prefix. Texts are classified using prefixes KA-KE, KL-KN, KR-KZ - for detail about specific subject areas CLICK HERE

Resources and Services

A reference service is available for the Biomedicine and Law Information Service Support Desk. Desk staff help clients
to locate specific material, use the collection efficiently and utilise the best methods of research. If a reference
question can't be answered by weekend staff it will be forwarded to the Law Librarian to follow through.

PLEASE NOTE - Law Library staff do not provide legal advice.

Law Reserve contains high demand material as well as items that are vulnerable and/or require special assistance.
Two items can be borrowed via the self-check unit for a 2 hour period or photocopying may be done in Law Reserve.
A wide variety of legal research databases  are available containing legislation, cases, looseleafs and articles.
