University of Newcastle Library Registration

Academic staff must register to gain access to the services and resources available from the University of Newcastle Library.  To register, complete the online Staff Registration Form.

Once this form is submitted you will be notified by email within 24 working hours of your Library number. 

NOTE: Upon enrolment with the University of Newcastle, your students are automatically registered with the University Library (students do not have to complete a separate library registration form).  A student's library number is their student number.

University of Newcastle Online Library Resources

The University of Newcastle Library subscribes to thousands of online databases, journals and books.  Access to these resources is authenticated either by:

  • Your Library Number plus Library PIN

  • Database and journal specific passwords.

NOTE: It is important that you and your students access these online resources via the links provided either within the University Library's catalogue - NEWCAT  or via the University Library's Reference and Databases webpages

If you do not access University Library subscribed resources using these links you may not be able to view the full-text of these resources.

Creating your Library PIN

You will need a Library PIN to:

  • Access online databases, journals and books

  • Use Short Loans Online

To create your Library PIN:

  • Go to My Library in Newcat

  • Enter your Library Registration Number, then create a PIN between 4 - 6 numbers. Do not use letters, special characters, or punctuation marks.

  • Click Submit, then re-enter the PIN twice more.

If you forget your Library PIN, you must complete the Forgotten your PIN Form.

When you click on a link from within NEWCAT or from the Library databases web pages you will be asked to enter your Library Number and Library PIN.  You only need to enter these details once each time you login.

Please encourage your students to create their Library PIN as well!

Individual Database and Journal Passwords

Some online resources require authentication via a password specific to that resource. If additional passwords are required, the NEWCAT or database screen will indicate this, or access a copy of the Usernames and Passwords for Library Online Resources sheet (Uni-ID and password required for access).

Get-It - Online Requesting Service

All University of Newcastle staff and students located at the PSB Campus are able to request, via the Get-Itservice, copies of journal articles, chapters from books or papers from conference proceedings not available either within the PSB Campus Library or online from the University Library.  Copies requested via Get-It are delivered electronically to your desktop.

You must register to use the Get-It service.

Once your registration has been processed you will be issued with a login and instructions detailing how to request items.

Ordering Books for the PSB Campus Library

The PSB Campus Library will purchase copies of all set texts and recommended readings for courses taught at PSB Singapore. Please advise your Executive Officer (listed below) of your needs as early as possible before semester starts to ensure availability of texts for your students.

Short Loans Online

The University Library, through its Short Loans facility, is responsible for maintaining a record of all digital copies and managing their availability on a University-wide basis.

All staff who wish to make digital copies of copyright work available to their students must contact the University Library's Short Loan Team to arrange for the digitization of resources.  This includes:

  • Scanning an article or book chapter in pdf format, and attaching it to a Short Loan course record.

  • Linking to online articles and conference papers in journal and reference databases.

Inclusion of an item in Short Loans Online is conditional on its not breaching copyright regulations.  In brief, the amount which can be digitally available online at any one time by the University is 10% or one chapter from any work.

Arranging for Items to be included in Short Loans Online

Please email the Short Loans staff the following details:

  • Lecturer's name

  • Course Code

  • Semester or Trimester the material is required

  • The following details of each item to be digitised:
    Journal Articles - Author, Title of article, Journal title, year, Volume, Issue, and Page numbers.
    Book Chapters - Author, Title of chapter, Book title, Editor of Book, Year, Place of Publication, Publisher and Page numbers.

Linking from Short Loans Online to your Blackboard Course

Once items are available via Short loans Online they can be linked to your Blackboard course to make it easier for your students to access.

The Short Loans Online collection can also be searched via the University Library's catalogue - NEWCAT by entering either the course code, or the course coordinator's surname.

Items available online are indicated in the NEWCAT record by the text - ELECTRONIC COPY AVAILABLE.  Online resources can be accessed by entering your Library PIN.

A Faculty Librarian is assigned to each of the University’s faculties, and is responsible for providing information and assistance to staff and students in relation to library matters.

Your Faculty Librarian can assist you:

  • Identify appropriate sources of scholarly information for your teaching and research needs.

  • Provide advice on good practice relating to the embedding of information literacy and academic integrity principles into assessments.

  • Design and create learning resources (including online tutorials, subject guides, Blackboard sites) to support your students.

Online Tutorials

The University of Newcastle Library has developed a number of online tutorials to assist your students develop their information literacy and academic integrity skills.

  • InfoSkills: Information Literacy and Academic Integrity Tutorial - Infoskills is a self-paced online tutorial designed to introduce students to a range of information and research skills that will assist with finding, using, evaluating and managing information. The tutorial also identifies issues surrounding academic integrity, including plagiarism, and their significance at the University of Newcastle.

  • EndNote Tutorial -  The EndNote Tutorial is designed to provide an introduction to using EndNote. The Tutorial is divided into 4 modules (Getting Started, Transferring from Databases, EndNote and Word, Managing Your Library), and incorporates an extensive index, site map, glossary, easy to follow navigation and extensive use of demonstration files to illustrate concepts covered.

  • NEWCAT Tutorials -  Learn how to use NEWCAT, the University of Newcastle library catalogue. 

  • ITskills - accessed from Blackboard. The University of Newcastle provides access to ITskills, a suite of "learn-it-yourself" training modules which are free to access.  Use it to get on top of Microsoft Office, Macromedia's design and media software, project management and all sorts of basic computer skills. 

    ITskills includes over 100 interactive online modules for the PC or Macintosh environments.  It's a great resource to assist you in developing basic and advanced IT skills for your University work.

Using EndNote as a Tool for Promoting Academic Integrity

EndNote is bibliographic software which can assist you and your students to organise your references and automatically create in-text citations and bibliographies in assignments and reports.

All current staff and students of the University are able to use EndNote free of charge.  The software can be downloaded from the University's Software Download site, or accessed on CDROM from the PSB Campus Library.

Support for Researchers and Postgraduate Students

Your Faculty Librarian is also available to assist you and your postgraduate students with research enquiries, including:

  • Using the Library's Scholarly Research Databases - the University Library subscribes to over 300 databases which index scholarly information from journal articles, research reports, patents and standards and government documents.

  • Tracking Research using Citation Indexes - Citation indexes provide a means of searching and analyzing literature not possible through simple keyword searches. These indexes enable you to gather data on the performance of individual authors and journals, as well as assess particular areas of research activity and publication.

  • Depositing your published research in the University of Newcastle's Digital Repository - NOVA.

  • Identifying highly ranked journals - using Journal Citation Reports, and other ranking schemes to identify journals in your discipline.

  • Identifying and Locating Theses - using a range of databases and repositories of the full-text of theses.

  • Keeping Up-To-Date with Literature - Alerting services assist you in keeping up to date with current literature in your discipline by automatically retrieving new records from scholarly database which match your literature needs.
