Common Errors

Here are some commons errors that I often see in bibiographies in the INFO1010 assignment.

1st edition. Don't use 1st ed. - if it's the first edition, just leave that information out. Only put in the edition if it is after the first! eg 2nd ed or 4th ed.

Volumes and books. Some books are part of a series and so the records will have volume numbers. See this example:

(If no picture appears below on your screen, check Newcat for Healey. J. (Ed.) (1999). Cloning. Balmain: Spinney Press.)

The volume relates to the series and you can ignore this when referencing the book.

Anonymous. If you don't have an author, then begin with the title of the book, web page, article etc. Anonymous is only used for literary works, eg poems, etc.

Ed or ed? Ed is for Editor - a person. ed is for edition - of a book.

Harvard. Harvard is a different referencing style. If you are asked to use APA in an assignment, do not use Harvard.

Alphabetical order. Write your bibliography in alphabetical order. Do not divide the list up into articles, books, web pages etc unless you are asked to.

Distributed by…in the USA. Do not include this information in the publisher. Simply put the name of the publisher, eg Elsevier.

Editor or author?  Check this carefully.  Usually Newcat will indicate if a book is edited or authored but sometimes it's really clear - In this record, even if you miss 'edited by', the word anthology is a give away.

Affairs, A.P.H.o.R.S.C  if you have an author in your bibliography like this, then you need to correct your entry in Endnote.  Remember to put a comma at the end of an author or editor's name, even when it is a corporate author like this one.

Have you got ALL your authors or editors?

It's important to check the title line in Newcat to make sure you've got ALL the editors or authors you need for your bibliography.  In the example below, if you only look at the first line, you'll miss one of the authors.
