Configuring your web browser
to use the University Proxy Server


The following information provides instructions to configure your web browser to access the Library databases when you are using a commercial internet service provider (ISP). Select the link for the web browser you are currently using.

Netscape 7
  1. Select Edit
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Click on the '+' to the left of the Advanced option
  4. Click on Proxies
  5. Click on the Automatic proxy configuration button
  6. Enter in the Configuration Location (URL) http://proxy.newcastle.edu.au/proxy.pac
  7. Click Reload and OK

Internet Explorer Version 5
  1. Select: Tools
  2. Select: Internet Options…
  3. Select: Connections
  4. In the Dial-up settings box find the icon with the name of your dial-up service.
    Click on the icon once to highlight it.
  5. Select: Settings…
  6. Uncheck the box next to: Automatically detect settings
  7. Check the box next to: Use automatic configuration script
  8. Enter this Address http://proxy.newcastle.edu.au/proxy.pac
  9. Click on OK
  10. Click on OK on the Internet Options menu

Internet Explorer Version 5.5

There is a documented bug which prevents Internet Explorer 5.5 from working with proxy servers. To correct this problem, you must download Service Patch 1 (SP1) from Microsoft's web site.

At the SP1 download site look under "Resolution: How to Obtain the Latest Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack", follow the link and instructions to download and install an updated version of Internet Explorer 5.5, which will work with proxy servers.

  1. Select: Tools
  2. Select: Internet Options…
  3. Select: Connections tab
  4. In the Dial-up settings box find the icon with the name of your dial-up service.
    Click on the icon once to highlight it.
  5. Select: Settings…
  6. Uncheck the box next to: Automatically detect settings
  7. Check the box next to: Use automatic configuration script
  8. Enter this Address http://proxy.newcastle.edu.au/proxy.pac
  9. Click on OK

Click on OK on the Internet Options menu

To determine if you need to download the "Service Patch", you will need to check the version of Internet Explorer you are using. Click on Help, click on About … In the window that appears, look for SP1 in the Updated Version line.


Internet Explorer Version 6
  1. Select: Tools
  2. Select: Internet Options…

  1. Select Edit
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Click on Advanced option
  4. Click on Proxies

  6. Enter in the Configuration Location (URL) http://proxy.newcastle.edu.au/proxy.pac
  7. Click Reload and OK

Apple Macs - Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer does not support the Automatic Proxy Configuration of Netscape. You can only manually set the proxy in Internet Explorer.

  1. Select Edit
  2. Select Preferences
  3. Select Network
  4. Click on Proxies
  5. Click Enabled
  6. Enter Address (URL) proxy.newcastle.edu.au
    (For bypass proxy servers, enter: *.newcastle.edu.au)
  7. Enter Port 8080
  8. Click OK

Mozilla Firefox
  1. Select Tools
  2. Select Options
  3. Click on the General tab
  4. Under the Connection pane click on Connection Settings
  5. Click on the Automatic proxy confuguration URL button
  6. Enter the Configuration Location (URL) http://proxy.newcastle.edu.au/proxy.pac
  7. Click Reload and OK
