EndNote Styles

EndNote's styles, called Output Styles, contain all the instructions necessary to format in-text citations and bibliography for a paper or thesis. The selected style determines how references are formatted when you the Format Bibliography, Format, Print, Export, or Copy Formatted commands are selected.

EndNote Version X comes pre-loaded with over 2,500 styles and includes all the common bibliographic formats, such as  APA, Chicago, MLA and Vancouver, as well as a number of styles for specific journals. The EndNote Styles are located in the C:\ Program Files\ EndNoteX\ Styles folder.

Modified versions of the APA 5th, Chicago, Harvard and Vancouver style are available below.  If you wish to use them, they should be downloaded and saved on your computer in C:\ Program Files\ EndNoteX\ Styles.

*N.B.  If you intend to use either of the modified APA styles above, you will also need to download the modified  RefTypeTable.xml file.  This file already exists on your computer, but if you wish to use the APA styles above, it is necessary to replace it with this modified one.

Windows users should save this file in their EndNote Application Data folder.  This is a hidden folder.  To display hidden folders on your computer, first go to Windows Explorer by doing a right click on the Windows Start button and selecting Explore. Then click on the Tools option on the menu bar, and select Folder Options.  When the dialog box opens, click on the View tab. In the Advanced Settings box, tick the option to Show hidden files and folders.  Click OK.

Once you have done this, locate your EndNote Application Data folder.  Usually, it is located in C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\EndNote.  Once you have established the location of the file on your computer, take note of its path, as this is where you will need to save the modified RefTypeTable file.  Click on the hyperlink above to the RefTypeTable.xml file, and use your browser's File | Save As command to save it to your computer.  You will be asked to confirm that you wish to replace the existing RefTypeTable file.

Macintosh users should save the file to the following location: user\library\application support\EndNote

Finding, previewing and modifying styles

Check the EndNote Style Finder, to locate a specific bibliographic style - you can search by entering features of a style.

You can create new styles, or modify existing styles. Start from the EndNote 'Styles' menu, from which you can edit the selected style, or choose New to create a new style from scratch. Detailed instructions are given in the manual. It is usually easier to find a style close to your requirements and edit it than it is to create a new style. If you do modify a style, it is wise to 'Save as' a new name, and keep the original style as well as the modified style.

Chicago Output Styles 15th ed.

The Chicago 15th A Style requires both footnotes and a bibliography.

To add cited pages, notes, etc to footnotes you must first disable the Instant Formatting option within Microsoft Word before using EndNote to insert references.  To do this:

Now when you using the Chicago 15th A style to insert references into your footnotes you will notice that they appear in the unformatted state - for example:

    [Waugh, 1945 #32]

To include a page number or note after the reference add the an "@" symbol followed by the pages or notes:

    [Waugh, 1945 #32@ 88]

[Waugh, 1945 #32@ An interesting point is raised by Waugh …]

When you are ready to format your footnotes and bibliography, select the Format Bibliography icon within Microsoft Word.  The unformatted citations will now format correctly, and will include the page number or other additional text you entered, after the reference.

If the paper you are working on already includes formatted references and you would like to add page numbers or notes to one of these, you need to convert these to the unformatted state -  click the Unformat Citation icon within Microsoft Word.  Add the additional information using the instructions above, then Format once again to view the changes.
