Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

There is a comprehensive collection of Australian Bureau of Statistics in the University of Newcastle Libraries. Most are located in the Auchmuty Library on Level 4.

The collection includes statistics covering the subject areas of demography, social statistics, national accounts, labour statistics, secondary industry, agriculture, mining and transport for both Australian and the States. Census information is available as well as directories, classifications, and current yearbooks for Australia and the States.

Archives, Rare Books and Special Collections

Archives, Rare Books and Special Collections are housed separately from the general collections. This collection is located on Level 2 of the Auchmuty Library, adjacent to the Law Library.

The Archives collects and preserves the permanently valuable records of the University and historically significant records of the University's organisations, staff and students. Formats held include manuscript, pictorial, sound (oral history) and printed material.

Theses presented in the University of Newcastle may be accessed in the Archives, Rare Books and Special Collections Reading room.

Biomedicine

The Biomedical collection on Level 3 of the Auchmuty Library, houses books, serials, pamphlets and reference material, including databases in the subject areas of Biological, Biomedical, Medical and Health Sciences. The Medical Reserve has curriculum resources to support the Faculty's problem-based undergraduate courses. Items within the area can only be borrowed by faculty students on overnight loans.

Curriculum Resources and Media Collection (CRMC)

The CRMC is housed within the Huxley Library. This collection contains a wide range of educational resources designed to support the research and teaching needs of trainee teachers. Curriculum resources include NSW Department of Education and Training policies and documents; Board of Studies syllabi and support materials; School Certificate and Higher School Certificate examination papers and reports; and educational tests.

The CRMC also has available for loan, teaching kits, pictures, big books, DVDs, videos, CDROMS, educational toys and aids including a significant collection of hand puppets. We also have a substantial children's literature collection.The Media Collection in the AV Room houses DVDs, videos, music CDs and cassettes, and multimedia CDROMs. Pictures, posters and art prints are housed in our Picture Room. We also have available for loan kits, DVDs, videos and CDROMS across the subject areas of Nursing, Art and Design, Medicine and Health Sciences as well as Education.

Government Publications

Government publications consist of Parliamentary Debates (Hansard), Parliamentary Papers (reports presented to Parliament) and other reports etc. issued by government departments, statutory bodies and parliamentary committees. These include the Annual Reports of Departments, Budget Papers, Royal Commissions, White Papers, Green Papers and many more. Government publications can usually be found throughout the general collection, except for current Parliamentary Papers which are located at S328.94008/5. A NEWCAT search will enable you to find the location of the item you require.

Law

The Law Collection on Level 3 of the Auchmuty Library is divided into primary materials (statutes, law reports, etc.), secondary materials (books and journals), digest materials and reference work. Only books are available for loans. A range of electronic databases is available including fulltext statute and case law as well as journal article indexes. A useful selection of Internet sites can be accessed from the Law Library's homepage

The Law Reserve Collection houses current legislations, loose-leaf services, recommended texts and extracts of cases and articles. Most material from Law Reserve is available for 2-hour loan.

The Law Collection uses the specialist classifications scheme - the Moys Classification Scheme for legal materials. This is an alphanumeric scheme with all call numbers beginning with the letter K.

Music

The Music collection is located in the City Precinct Library. There are over 4,000 books, 78 serial titles, 32,000 musical scores and 5,000 recordings in a specialist musical collection focussing on classical European and Australian contemporary music with collections in music therapy and ethnomusicology. A wide range of databases is available for use within the Library, and access to other electronic information resources via online databases and the Internet is also provided. A general purpose computing laboratory is available adjacent to the Library on Level 1.

Reference

Each Library has a collection of reference books (bibliographies, encyclopaedias, dictionaries etc.) intended to satisfy requests for information - from those of a general nature, such as a request for the address of an organisation, to those of a specific subject-related enquiry. Items in the reference collection are not available for loan.

Short Loans

Short Loans collections is located on the entrance level of each Library. High-demand books and photocopies are available for 2-hours loans periods, and videos for 4-hour periods. There are also subject-specialised short loans collections in Music, Law and Medicine.

Open and Closed Stack Collection

The Open Stack on Level 1 of the Auchmuty Library, houses low-usage books and closed serial runs from both Libraries. This area is accessed via the Auchmuty Information Common.

The Closed Stack houses older, seldom-used library material in colour-coded sections. Material held in the Closed Stack has a message in the LOCATION box on NEWCAT e.g. Closed Stack-Red. Closed Stack materials can be paged from any campus Library by placing a hold on the NEWCAT system. Paged items may be collected at Auchmuty or at your home Library's hold shelf under the usual reserved item conditions. Items are retrieved from Auchmuty Closed Stack at advertised times.
