What is the Open Door School to University Library Program?

The University of Newcastle Library offers local secondary school students the opportunity to get a head start on tertiary studies by joining the University Library. School students will be able to borrow from the University collections, as well as use online resources while they are on campus, and receive valuable advice and information from Library staff. The University of Newcastle Library has the biggest collection of books in the state (outside of Sydney) and students will be able to borrow from over one million books, and use journals, DVDs and videos while in the library.

So while you’re working away on your school assignments, studying hard for the HSC, or just looking for a good book to read, save yourself some research time and head to the Auchmuty or Huxley libraries at the Callaghan campus, the City library or the Ourimbah campus library.

Am I eligible to join?

If you are a Year 7-12 student at a local secondary school you are able to join the Open Door Program.

Teachers may join as either Community, Corporate or Convocation Members. For more information about membership for Teachers see the information for Community Borrowers.

What can I borrow?

Will I be able to use the Internet?

Due to our license agreement the Library is only able to provide general Internet access to staff and students of the University.

While you are on any of the University of Newcastle campuses you will be able to access most of our collection of online journals and databases. Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions, off campus access is only available to staff and students of the University.
