What can be deposited

University of Newcastle theses only, PhD or Masters by research.  The theses will be available online in NOVA: the University of Newcastle's Digital Repository.

Other theses, e.g., DBA, may also be submitted via the NOVA Digital Repository thesis deposit form, but will not be included in the national ADT database.

Copyright issues

Please check your thesis for any material that is subject to copyright. For example, if you have included any diagrams, illustrations, or photographs that are not your own work, you will need to obtain written permission from the copyright owners for online publishing.  You will also need to upload the permission documents you received from the copyright owners, as they will need to be kept in the repository as a record.

Ideally you should have obtained these permissions and modified your thesis if necessary before submitting it for examination.  However, if your examined thesis includes copyrighted material for which you cannot obtain permission then it will need to be removed from your digital thesis.  In this case, please contact the ADT Co-ordinator for advice on the best way to go about this.

The OAK Law Project at Queensland University of Technology has produced a very useful guide to copyright issues:

Copyright Guide for Research Students: What you need to know about copyright before depositing your electronic thesis in an online repository.

Theses format

Before depositing your thesis convert it to PDF format if possible. This is not a requirement, so if you do not have ready access to the Acrobat program, please upload your files in their original format (Word, etc).

Acrobat is loaded on computers within each Faculty. A free service which allows you to create up to five PDF files is available at the Adobe site.

Naming files

It is helpful if you follow the ADT standard format for naming your files. You need to create at least two files. If your thesis is one file and you are unable to split it without upsetting the formatting, then just upload the single file.  Note: there is an upload file size limit of 15MB.  If your thesis is larger than that you will need to split into two or more files, or contact the ADT Co-ordinator for help.

01front includes the title/author information; abstract, acknowledgements; table of contents; introduction; preface and any other introductory text that is not part of the main body of the thesis.

02whole  contains the entire thesis including what is contained in the 01front file.
or:
If the thesis is large then it is better to divide the thesis into chapters or groups of chapters, e.g. 02chapter1, 03chapter2; or 02chapters1-5, 03chapters6-10.

Restricting access to your thesis

The ADT ideal is unrestricted worldwide access, however, there are circumstances when theses need to be restricted wholly or in part, for varying periods. The options available for the ADT Program are:

Please Note: Partial restriction is not available via the deposit form and you will need to identify the files concerned to the ADT Co-ordinator .
