University of Newcastle Legal Unit

The Legal Unit, through its in-house solicitors, provides a comprehensive legal service to the University as its sole client. The Unit provides independent and objective legal advice to the University. It is committed to a policy of timely, cost- effective, professional services and to reducing litigation and minimising legal risks in the performance of the daily operations of the University.

It is University policy that all University legal work must first come to the Legal Unit through the University Legal Counsel.

Instructions to and engagement of external Legal advisors may only be dealt with by the Legal Unit.

What we can do for you

We provide advice and assistance on a variety of University matters, including:

negotiation and drafting of contracts in which the University has an interest
legislation including University statutes and regulations
litigation on behalf of the University
trust funds, bequests and corporate governance issues
trade practices, employment law, privacy, intellectual property and information technology
leasing and licensing of property

provide personal legal advice to staff or students

The Legal Unit is located on Level 2, Room 259 of the Chancellery Building, Callaghan Campus.
