Academic Dress

Graduates are required to wear the approved University of Newcastle academic dress when participating in a Graduation Ceremony. Academic dress is available as part of the Graduation package with gowns, trenchers (caps) and hoods for hire or purchase.

What do I wear under my academic dress?

The academic gown is not a closed gown, so we suggest wearing "smart casual" or business clothing underneath. Remember, your photograph will be taken as you are presented with your testamur, and portrait photography is available by arrangement in the Shortland Building after your ceremony.

What colour is my Academic Dress?

The items of academic dress required for your award are noted in your letter of invitation to graduation. To see a list of academic dress colours for each program of study please visit the Academic Dress Colours web page. To view a sample of the Academic Dress Colours click here.  

How do I wear my Academic Dress?

Graphic and pictorial images of how to wear your academic dress can be viewed at How Do I Wear My Academic Dress?  University staff wearing maroon gowns will be available prior to your ceremony to provide assistance.
