Just the FAQs about NUmail
NUmail is the web based email and calendaring service for students of the University of Newcastle.
NUmail provides your official email address through which the University sends email communications, and it is recorded in the University's electronic directories.
Students are expected to check their email frequently to stay aware of University-related communications. If a student wishes to have email forwarded to another email address (e.g., @bigpond.com, @gmail.com), the individual student may do so, but at his or her own risk. The University is not responsible for the handling of email by outside vendors. Having email forwarded does not change the individual's responsibility for reading and responding to official communications sent to their Live@edu email account.

As a student you will be automatically provided with an account when your relationship with the University begins. For example, when you first enrol to study at the University.

I share a computer with other people. Can we all access Microsoft Live applications?
Yes.
If you select the Microsoft Live Application page via www.outlook.com and there is an account already “Signed In”, click the “Forget me” or click on “Sign in with a different account”. This will change the screen and allow you to log in with your own details.
Please take note: if you are using a shared computer, such as a shared computer in a common room or public library, do not use the “Remember me on this computer” or the “Remember my password” options.

Why do I get a message that I don't have an account when I try to log in?
This can happen if the login or password has been entered incorrectly. Passwords are case sensitive.
If you have checked these details are correct, it may be that you have not accepted the required Terms and Conditions of Use. You must accept T&C in three separate places - each relating to separate systems.
Check that you have accepted the T&C in myHub (for enrolment purposes), in Online Services (for computing use at the University) and for your Microsoft Outlook account.

How can I find out how to use NUmail?
Instructions are available on the Microsoft Outlook help pages.

Can I change my NUmail account name?
No.
The account name has been automatically generated from the student records system based on your student number and the new email system domain name, in the form of c1234567@uon.edu.au
Last updated 10/02/10
Can I change my email address?
No.
Your email mailbox is created using your account name ie c1234567@uon.edu.au.
We also create what are called aliases that are email addresses that point to your mailbox. This ensures any emails sent to any of these aliases will end up in your mailbox for you to access. The aliases created are in the form: firstname.lastname@uon.edu.au - this is based on your name so that email sent to you by name will be directed to your mailbox.

What if someone else has the same firstname and lastname as me?
If there is already an existing email alias in the format firstname.lastname@uon.edu.au, a unique email alias will be generated using your middle initial or by adding a unique number to the end of your name.

What happens to my email address if I change my name?
You should officially change your name with the University by completing a Name Change Advice form. Once your name has been updated in the student administration system, a new email alias will be automatically generated in the format firstname.lastname@uon.edu.au, using your new name details. Your old email address will still continue to work.
Last updated 15/02/10
Can I add another email alias?
No.
The University needs to control all email addresses and aliases to ensure that two (2) students do not use the same address, which may result in undeliverable emails.

How do I access my NUmail account?
Access is via the Internet. There will be a number of places on the University web site where you can link to your email.
Alternatively, you can access the login page directly by typing http://www.outlook.com/uon.edu.au into your browser.
Last updated 19/02/10

Last updated 11/02/10
How do I change my NUmail password?
If you are a current student, to change your NUmail password, simply change your University password in the Online Services area of the University web site. This change will automatically flow through to NUmail, ensuring that your password is always the same across all University systems.
If you are a graduate and no longer have a University account, you can change your password directly via Live@edu.
Current students also have access to change their password within NUmail, however we do not recommend you change your password here for sychronisation reasons. Changing your password in NUmail will not affect your University password, however if you subsequently change your University password, your NUmail password will be overwritten.

How does Live@edu handle spam and phishing?
Live@edu uses an online protection system to combat spam and phishing. New emails received are assigned a spam confidence level (SCL) rating, based on the message content, message header, etc, indicating the likelihood that the message is spam. By default, emails with a high SCL are automatically deleted, emails with a moderate SCL are delivered to the user's Junk E-mail folder and emails with a low SCL are delivered to the user's Inbox.
You can also set up your own junk e-mail settings to block or allow certain senders.
Information is available at the Microsoft Outlook help pages.
