Operating Systems

IT Services manages the fleet of University owned computers via a Managed Operating Environment (MOE).

The operating system installed on the majority of these computers is Windows, followed by Mac OS and iOS.

Under certain circumstances, for example research requirements, other operating systems such as Redhat Linux , can be installed and managed by IT Services. Requests for non standard operating systems can be made via the 17triplezero IT Service Desk.
Visit our eResearch Support web pages for additional information about research computing.

Are you ready to upgrade?

If you would like to jump the queue and upgrade to Windows 7 in the near future, there are a few things you should consider.

Do you have a large amount of data to transfer?
Generally speaking, upgrading a computer takes a few hours. The process takes longer if you have a significant amount of data to transfer.
It is your responsibility to back up your data before any transfer takes place. Refer to staff backup options for further information.

Is your computer nearing the end of its lease?
If this is the case, waiting for your new computer may be more time efficient.
