ESOS Student Compliance
The University's ESOS Student Compliance Unit is responsible for ensuring we adhere to the criteria of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) framework. This framework is in place to regulate the education and training sector's dealings with overseas students studying in Australia.

Enrolment
You should enrol in a full time study load or you might not complete your program within the duration specified in your CoE.
- Semester: Full time load is 40 units per semester
- Trimester: Full time load is 30 units per trimester
Course Credit
If you have been granted credit after commencing your studies at the University of Newcastle then it is your responsibility to enrol in full time enrolment in each term. Your CoE duration will be reduced to the revised end date.
Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
A CoE is issued for the expected duration of studies. This is the time it will take you to complete the degree while studying full time.
If you do not complete your program within the duration as stated on your CoE, your visa can only be extended for the following reasons:
- Compassionate or compelling circumstances (eg illness where a medical certificate states that the student was unable to attend classes or where the registered provider was unable to offer a pre-requisite unit;
- The registered provider implementing its intervention strategy for students who are at risk of not meeting satisfactory course progress;
- An approved Leave of Absence has been granted.
You must contact your Program Officer to obtain a CoE Extension letter and this will be forwarded to the ESOS Student Compliance Unit who will issue the CoE extension if there are no outstanding debts to the University.
CoE extensions are processed usually within 2 working days.
Maintaining Australian Address
You must advise the University of your current address within seven days of arriving in Australia.
If you change your address during your stay in Australia, you must advise the University within seven days. You can do this by logging onto MyHub.
Transferring Providers Students who want to transfer to another provider must provide the following: an offer letter from your new provider complete a Request for Letter of Release form ELICOS students must contact the Language centre to meet with the ELICOS Coordinator to obtain a Withdrawal letter. Please note that if you are a sponsored student or are studying at the University on a scholarship, it is your responsibility to inform your sponsor/scholarship provider of this revised study duration and to seek their approval for this amendment to your study duration This process takes approximately 5 working days and if all documentation is not supplied or if you have an outstanding debt a Letter of Release will be denied until all documentation is provided and your debts cleared.
