
For students in catered accommodation, a continental breakfast is available in the Dining Room Monday to Friday from 7.45am to 9.00am and on weekends from 9.00am to 1.00pm, with lunch items also being served from 11.00am onwards. An evening meal is available each evening from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Formal dinners are held on several occasions throughout the year.
The varied menu provides a hot evening meal, accompanied by soup, and a selection of salads each night. A cyclic menu system is utilised at the Hall and weekly menus are posted in advance on the noticeboard in the Servery of the Dining Room. Residents may invite guests to a meal in the Dining Room but are required to pay for the meal at the time of receipt. Take-away breakfasts and dinners are available during semester teaching weeks for members who have academic commitments. Residents who are temporarily unable to attend the Dining Room for meals due to illness or accident can be provided with meals in their rooms.
Tearooms and small kitchens are available in both Burnet and Cutler Houses these communal areas are provided with a sink, large refrigerator and microwave oven. The Hall provides some cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery.
A laundry/drying room unit is provided in both Burnet and Cutler Houses and these units are equipped with automatic washing machines and tumble dryers. An external clothes hoist is provided for both Houses. Ironing boards are provided but the Hall does not supply electric irons.
All bedrooms are equipped with telephones allowing residents to make and receive calls at any time. An extensive voicemail package also permits callers to leave messages for absent residents and for residents to send messages amongst themselves. Residents can retrieve messages from their extension or by dialing into the system from an external tone dialing telephone.
The Hall Office, located in the Central Facilities Building, will normally be open each weekday during the residential year (except Public Holidays) at the following times: 8.00am - 12.30pm, and 1.30pm - 4.00pm. Mail and messages addressed to residents will be placed in the mail rack located in the foyer adjacent to the Office area. The correct postal address for members' mail is:
Residents may also receive facsimile messages on the Hall's fax number. A charge is made for receiving and sending facsimile messages.
For residents with an interest in music, a practice room containing a piano and a Keyboard is located in the Central Facilities Building. A Grand Piano in the Dining Room is appreciated by all residents, particularly at special functions provided throughout the year.
A sauna, photographic darkroom, sewing room, snooker, pool and table tennis and television lounges are available for the communal use by all residents. The Forsythe Cellar functions as the central common room of the Hall. This area is available for residents who wish to consume alcohol moderately or to hold birthday parties, etc. A stereo music centre, large-screen television, Foxtel, DVD and video facilities have been provided.
Outside the Forsythe Cellar we have a beautiful swimming pool and pool area which is enjoyed by residents through the warmer months.
Residents are advised that they may make use of the Hall's parking facilities by obtaining a permanent or casual parking permit (for car or motorcycle) from the Hall Office.
Excellent bike pathways linking the residential area to all buildings on the main campus are provided and residents who wish to bring their pushbike to the Hall are asked to store them in the locked, external bike storage area provided.
The Hall does not accept responsibility for any loss or damage to the personal property of members. Members who wish to take out an appropriate insurance policy on possessions they keep at the Hall, including bicycles, should make arrangements with an Insurance Company of their own choice.
The Hall appoints a number of Academic Assistants, Resident Assistants and Senior Residents as staff who assist in the general administration of the Hall and act as resource individuals particularly for first year students. Residential Staff occupy bedrooms in Burnet House, Cutler House and in Self-Catered Units.
From midnight on each week night until breakfast on the following morning and over the weekend, there will be a member of residential staff on duty who may be contacted for assistance if required.
For security reasons members are advised to lock their doors while absent from their rooms. All external doors are alarmed and the security system in the Hall provides resident access by security tag to Burnet and Cutler Houses on a 24 hours per day basis. For the added protection of members and their property, the grounds of the Hall are patrolled at night on a random basis by University Security officers.
Burnet and Cutler Houses are equipped with fully automatic smoke detectors systems in addition to a fire alarm system connected directly to the Newcastle Fire Brigade for the added protection of members.
Smoking is not permitted inside, or within 5 metres of any of the academic or administrative buildings of the University.
