Welcome to the Barahineban web site. Barahineban is the newest of the University's residences on-campus and one of the two self-catered residences. Founded in 2001, "Barahineban" is an Awabakal word meaning a "bright place to live".
It provides 96 units of accommodation suitable for single, twin or double occupancy, with six units made accessible for those with disabilities.
Barahineban is an exciting alternative to the traditional colleges in that it offers a more independent living style. While there are Residential Staff selected to provide pastoral care and to organize some activities, and residents living at Barahineban are expected to be fairly independent and require minimal support. Barahineban has evolved into a more senior residential college where most of the residents here are at least in their second year at University or have transfered from the other colleges of this university in their third and fourth year. Unlike the other colleges, Barahineban provides accommodation to residents who prefer a quieter and independent style of college living.
The complex is designed to be as energy efficient as possible. Water is heated by an extensive array of solar
collectors, with backup provided by efficient natural gas boilers. All power use in rooms is controlled by 'smart card', so power is switched off when residents are away. In designing the complex, natural air movement was computer modelled to maximise comfort, although the rooms are also equipped with an energy efficient air conditioning system for the extremes of summer and winter.
Barahineban provides a mix of communal and independent living and seeks to find a balance between both depending on the individual. Members of the Residential Staff are selected and trained to offer support, leadership and to integrate the members of this diverse community. A number of events and activities, both sporting and social, are organized throughout the year providing residents opportunities for students to integrate and feel comfortable in the college.
We hope you enjoy viewing the web site.
