Introduction and Background

The values of the University of Newcastle are the five values that form the basis of Academic Integrity, namely:

These values are the bases of all academic endeavours in teaching, learning and research. All members of the University community, be they students, staff, contractors, partners or visitors, are required to uphold the Values and comply with the Code of Conduct in all of their activities.

Background

The University Council has been proactive in dealing with the area of academic integrity, demonstrating the University’s commitment to review and continuous improvement through commissioning the St James Ethics Centre inquiry.

The way forward

As the St James Ethics Centre Report notes, plagiarism is a complex issue for today’s universities. Given this complexity it is necessary to have a broad ranging action strategy for it to be effective. The University of Newcastle is taking the opportunity to be a best practice leader in the management of plagiarism.
