Evidence for a trait of self-control (and for the misunderstood construct of 'personality'!).

Background for presentation by Dr Melissa Gao and A/Prof Shugang Wang

A team of researchers from the University of Newcastle is investigating ways to educate the gay community and ethnic minorities in rural areas of China about the impact of HIV/AIDS. The work with ethnic minorities uses their oral story telling tradition. These HIV/AIDS educaton projects are performed in associaton with the newly established Chinese-Australian Centre for Cross Cultural Research at Sichuan University in China. HIV//AIDS is a serious problem in Sichuan province, and the traditional areas where the Yi and Tibetans live have the highest infection rate. Communicating the risks and finding ways to link in to local government and health care policy depends on cultural leaders becoming involved. The cross-cultural project researches how health role model stories, that draw on ethnic and cultural contexts like myth, language and sex-related anecdotes, can be used to teach people about sexual health and care. The various projects are the work of Dr Melissa Gao, Associate Professor Shuguang Wang and Professor Daphne Keats, from the University of Newcastle funded by the John and Daphne Keats Endowment Research Fund with the cooperation of Professor Deng Shengqing, the Dean of the School of Continuing Education and Adult Education at Sichuan University, who has been appointed as the Director of the new Chinese-Australian Cross Cultural Research Centre, with A/Prof Wang appointed Deputy Director.
