Master of Aviation Management
Graduated in: 2006
Why did you choose to study Aviation Management at Newcastle?
Having already completed a Bachelors Aviation (Human Factors) degree with another university, I decided to undertake the Master of Aviation Management degree because it offered both aviation and management subjects combined in one Masters degree. I did not want to simply repeat the same subjects again in slightly more depth. The degree at Newcastle also allowed me to study when and where I wanted. I travel extensively in my job as Head of Corporate Safety for an international airline and consequently needed flexibility in my personal schedule. I also wanted to study with a University that did not require any mandatory attendance but also had a good reputation for academic excellence.
The degree was also completely appropriate for my job which has elements of both safety and management responsibility. I found the method of delivery to be excellent and the lecturers to be both highly professional and helpful. Overall an excellent learning experience.
What was the best thing about the Aviation Management program?
A number of things such as the choice of subjects available to study and flexibility. In addition, the facilitators were excellent - all extremely helpful and responsive.
How did you find the support and service of staff at the University?
All very good. They seemed to appreciate that flexibility was absolutely necessary when a student is trying to study whilst also holding down a full time career. Academic standards were very high and access to academic staff was simple.
Where are you currently working and what are you currently doing? How has your Aviation Management degree helped you in your professional life?
I'm currently Head of Corporate Safety for an international airline. The degree has enhanced my understanding and writing in the subjects covered. Also, some of the management principles studied in the management portion of the degree have been helpful in managing both departmental staff as well as assisted in making changes to organisational culture.
What advice would you give to future students considering studying Aviation Management at Newcastle?
Thoroughly recommended. Allow a significant amount of time to study each week if you are to obtain the maximum personal value.
