Postgraduate Coursework
For students seeking a career as a professional psychologist the School of Psychology offer a two-year Masters program in Clinical Psychology or three-year Professional Doctorate programs in Clinical Psychology and combined Clinical and Health Psychology. These programs provide students with dedicated coursework together with extensive clinical placement and research experience, preparing our graduates for careers as clinical or health psychologists.
Placements are offered through the Psychology Clinic and with conjoint academic staff who are practicing psychologists in Hunter, New England and North Sydney Area Health Services as well other health organisations and private practices.
The Graduate Diploma in Psychology will provide students with a 4th year in Psychology that satisfies the requirements for accreditation by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). The Graduate Diploma allows students to develop advanced research and pre-professional level skills though is not an honours program and does not provide entry into Coursework and Research degrees.
There are a range of Postgraduate Coursework programs that may be of interest to Psychology graduates. These include Graduate Certificate versions that stand alone or can be articulated to the Masters level, plus options for studying on campus or online.
Entry into the Clinical programs is competitive and places are limited. All applications must be submitted in conjunction with a professional portfolio that is to be sent directy to the University. Guidelines for portfolio submission
Psychology (Postgraduate)
Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Postgraduate)
The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Postgraduate) will provide students with a 4th year in Psychology that satisfies the requirements for accreditation by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). It will allow students to develop advanced research skills, skills at a pre-professional level in psychological assessment and counselling, as well as acquire knowledge of a number of areas of psychology at an advanced level.
Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma will allow students to meet the Australian Psychological Society (APS) requirements for entry to accredited psychology coursework Masters programs, as well as meeting the academic requirements for entry into our professional training program at the Masters level. The Graduate Diploma is not an Honours program, and therefore, graduates will not be eligible for entry into the PhDs in Clinical and Health Psychology, or other Research Higher Degrees.

Doctor of Clinical Psychology
The Master of Clinical Psychology is a professional qualification for those who wish to work as clinical psychologists. Graduates will be knowledgeable, skilled and ethical practitioners of Clinical Psychology, capable of adhering to the 'scientist-professional' model of practice. The program is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and approved by the College of Clinical Psychologists for the purposes of determining College membership, and accepted by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board as an approved fifth and sixth year of study.
The Doctor of Clinical Psychology is a professional qualification for those who wish to work as clinical psychologists. Graduates of the Doctor of Clinical Psychology will be capable of conducting research that makes an original and significant contribution of merit in Clinical Psychology. They will also be knowledgeable, skilled and ethical practitioners of Clinical Psychology, who have a wide-ranging understanding of their profession, and who are capable of adhering to the model of practice specified in the Course Approval Guidelines of the Australian Psychological Society. The program is accredited by the Australian Psychological Society (APS), and approved by the College of Clinical Psychologists for the purposes of determining College membership, and accepted by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board as an approved fifth, sixth and seventh year of study.
Clinical and Health Psychology
Doctor of Clinical and Health Psychology
The Doctor of Clinical and Health Psychology is a professional qualification for those who wish to work as Clinical Psychologists or Health Psychologists. It aims to train psychologists who can apply psychological research and methods to: the prevention and management of disease and mental disorder; the promotion and maintenance of (mental) health; the identification of psychological factors contributing to illness and disorder; and the improvement of the health care system and health policy.
The program has been approved by the College of Clinical Psychologists and the College of Health Psychologists of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) for the purpose of determining eligibility for college membership.
